TUCSON, Arizona - Powered by a brace from forward Long Tan, Arizona United Soccer Club moved on to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup in a 5-0 route over FC Tucson. Arizona United will play its next U.S. Open Cup match at Peoria Sports Complex on June 1 against fellow USL side Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

"The finishing was excellent tonight," said Arizona United head coach Frank Yallop. "I think we had about 10 chances and scored 5 goals. So from a coaching side of it, efficiency was great. I thought we played well tonight."

Arizona United SC and FC Tucson battled for the first 25 minutes of the match with neither side scoring a goal. But following an FC Tucson foul in the 28th minute, midfielder Luke Rooney buried a free kick from 25 yards away to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.

United then scored two more highlight-worthy goals before the end of the half. Forward Long Tan danced around several defenders before unleashing a shot to beat the keeper in the 33rd minute to make it 2-0. Then just before the halftime whistle, midfielder Gibson Bardsley headed home a pinpoint cross from Sam Garza to extend the lead to 3-0.

"On our way here we said we need to score goals today," Blackwood said. "We haven't been doing it, we haven't scored over one, two goals in a game and so we need to open the floodgates today and let that carry into Saturday. Can't ask for much more than 5-0."

The scoring didn't stop in the second half. Forward Tyler Blackwood made it 4-0 after making a defender fall over to give himself space to shoot in the 47th minute. Then Tan scored his second goal of the evening in the 68th minute to close out the scoring for the evening.

"As a striker you never want to come out of a game without scoring a goal," Blackwood said. "So for me, I always want to score, so it's perfect for me. But I'm buzzing for someone like Long who has been playing out of position and today gets a chance in his position with me up top and scores two."

Arizona United Soccer Club resumes league play this Saturday, May 21, against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at the Peoria Sports Complex.
