Alexandria Aces News Release
SAN ANGELO- Danny Hernandez's one out opposite field single to right field of Gabe Grammer in the bottom of the 10th inning completed a wild, seesaw affair to give the San Angelo Colts a 16-15 victory against the Alexandria Aces Monday night at Foster Field.
The Colts (13-11) held leads of 11-1 and 12-2, bouyed by a 2-run home run from Kyle Nichols in the bottom of the first and a 7-run second innnig in which Tyler Wagner and Dan Evatt collected 2-run hits off Aces starter Trey Mayeux and reliever Jadd Schmeltzer, respectively.
But in the top of the fifth, the Aces (11-13) started to come back off former Ace and spot starter Frank James with three runs.
Steve Merschlich came on to relieve James, who was starting in place of strep throat ridden Demetrius Banks. But the lefty reliever could not retire any of the four batters he faced. Russell Johns was only mildly more effective, and by the time Michael Haynes singled to right to plate Nick Mahin in the top of the seventh the Aces had scored 11 unanswered runs to take a 13-12 lead.
San Angelo tied the game in the seventh and went ahead in the bottom of the eighth when Evatt's wind aided double over the head of centerfielder Chad Bunting plated Preston Lyon to give the Colts a 14-13 lead.
But three walks and a hit batsman off Colts reliever Alfredo Caballero (1-2) in the top of the ninth gave Alexandria a 15-14 lead, with Haynes squeeze bunt driving in Mahin with the go-ahead tally.
In the bottom of the ninth, Steve Rinaudo hit a short fly ball to right field off Grammer (1-3) with Jon Dziomba on first base that Austin Newell made a diving attempt for but could not catch that went for an RBI triple. Then, after Caballero retired the Aces without scoring in the ninth, Braden Embry and Oscar Garcia begat Hernandez's game winning hit with singles of their own.
Mahin and Newell both scored four runs for Alexandria, while Haynes drove in five runs, Derrick Pyles four, and Doug Freeman three.
Rinaudo had four hits for San Angelo and drove in two runs while scoring another.
Alexandria now travels to Edinburg for a four game series with the Roadrunners. Jon Jones (3-0) pitches Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. for the Aces.
