Union Park Middle School Student First Ever Florida Flight J's for A's Winner
(Orlando, FL) - The Florida Flight kicked off Memorial Day weekend by awarding the first ever J's for A's winner on Friday, May 25th.
Cricynda Quibell, hailing from Union Park Middle School, enjoyed a ride in the Night Train Party Bus with members of the Florida Flight, five of her friends, her mother, and AVID Program Coordinator, Ms. Jessica Scheff.
The group celebrated from Union Park to the Florida Mall, where Quibell was allowed to choose any pair of Jordan-brand sneakers, paid for by the Florida Flight.
"We really wanted to take our community outreach up a notch this season," said Flight Owner and Head Coach Mark King.
"Creating a program that rewarded and motivated excellent educational performance was a top priority for us. We are excited to have finally launched this program."
The J's for A's program rewards students for perfection in the classroom. Each semester, the Flight collects copies of report cards from students who receive all A's. Students with A- grades do not qualify. One winner for each school semester is selected and awarded a trip on the party bus to a shoe store to select a Jordan-brand sneaker of his or her choice.
"When kids work hard in the classroom, they deserve to be recognized for it!" said Starla Hornbeek, mother of Quibell. "I am grateful to the Florida Flight for giving back so generously to the kids in our community.
The next round for the J's for A's contest will take place during the 2012-2013 school year. The winner will be announced at halftime on December 8th during the Flight's 3rd Annual Toys for Tots charity basketball game.
"We have to do more than play good basketball to make the impact that we expect to make in our community," said King. "Our ideas and motives are sincere. It will only be a matter of time before we start seeing large crowds at our games."
Students and teachers seeking to participate should email copies of qualifying report cards to [email protected]
The mission of the Florida Flight is to utilize the platform of professional basketball to invest in the lives of others.
The 2012 season is dedicated to the "Bithlo Needs a Bus" Campaign. For more information on the Florida Flight, please visit www.flighthoops.com. For more information about the Florida Basketball Association, please visit www.thefba.com.
