Rockford IceHogs News Release
Moline, Ill.- Lately the games haven't been this close. The Rockford IceHogs eeked out a 4-3 nail-biter over the Quad City Mallards to extend its season long unbeaten streak to eight straight contests (7-0-1). IceHogs winger Kevin Ulanski netted a third period short-handed to give Rockford the lead for good.
After a penalty was whistled on Hogs winger Jesse Bennefield, the Hogs were the ones to capitalize. Ulanski picked up a cross-ice pass from Nicolas Corbeil and he fired home his 13th goal of the season past Jason Tapp. Hogs goalie Frederic Cloutier withstood a Mallards third period barrage to help the Hogs to the win.
Despite dominating the opening frame, the IceHogs found themselves down 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. Quad City center Sean Starke slid a loose puck past Frederic Cloutier at 1:23 of the opening frame, his seventh goal of the season. Rockford outshot the Mallards 22-10 in the first period.
Rockford would fall behind 2-0 in the second period after Luke Stauffacher netted a short-handed goal on a breakaway at 1:07. The IceHogs answered with three straight markers to take a 3-2 lead. Red hot center Preston Mizzi started the Hogs scoring when he sniped his 15th marker past Tapp at 2:35.
Winger Jason Notermann accounted for the next two Rockford goals. Notermann's first came at 11:04 when his wrist shot in traffic found the back of the net. Later, at 14:26, Notermann potted his second of the evening and seventh of the season when he shelved a marker past Tapp. Rockford's lead wouldn't last long, however, as winger Chad Woollard snuck his 20th goal of the season past Cloutier to tie the game heading into the second intermission.
Each team netted a short-handed tally and both clubs went scoreless on the power play. The Hogs outshot the Mallards 45-40 with Cloutier earning the win turning away 37 shots. Rockford also extended its road unbeaten streak to six straight games (5-0-1)
