U.S. Wins, Comes up Short

August 10, 2011 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa-Two goals in the closing minutes allowed the U.S. Under-18 Select Team to top their Slovakian hosts 6-5 in a shootout on Wednesday at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in Pierstany, but the American squad still failed to qualify for the event's semifinals.

Trailing 5-3 with under five minutes to play, a late power play spurred the United States' comeback. Jordan Masters scored his second goal of the evening during the advantage with 3:01 remaining. Just 55 seconds later, Waterloo Black Hawks forward Vince Hinostroza set up the equalizer off the stick of Alex Galchenyuk. In the shootout which followed, Galchenyuk and Masters each converted their opportunities. Hinostroza finished the game with two assists.

However, Russia's victory over Finland earlier in the day eliminated the U.S. from medal round play. The Selects will skate in the competition's Fifth-Place game on Friday.

Waterloo native and Black Hawks affiliate Cal Petersen started the game in net, allowing three goals on eleven shots in the first period. Two of those three goals were scored during power plays for Slovakia. The home team had seven power plays during the matchup, compared to four for the U.S.
