U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night at the sportsplex

MARINERS VS. RICHMOND KICKERS FUTURE AT 7:30 P.M.

Virginia Beach, Virginia -- The Mariners will host the Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) Wednesday night in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Soccer players wearing their soccer jerseys get in free and all other tickets are just $5. Children 10 and under are free and hot dogs and drinks are just $1. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The winner of Wednesday's match will travel to Rochester to face the USL First Division Rhinos on July 13 in the tournament's third round.

The Match Up

Virginia Beach Mariners The Mariners are coming off a determined 2-1 win over the Atlanta Silverbacks. John Barry Nusum scored the winning goal in the 52nd minute after teammate David Castellanos took the Mariners up 1-0 in just the 5th minute of the match. Teamwork brought home the win. Midfielder Darren Caskey leads the team in points with 9 in 13 games (4 goals, 1 assist), followed by David Castellanos who has tallied 7 points in 14 games. Caskey ranks 10th in the USL First Division; Castellanos is 19th. Caskey also ranks 10th in goals scored. Goalkeeper Matt Nelson ranks 9th in the Division in saves with 32.

Richmond Kickers Future The Future currently sits atop the Premier Development League's Eastern Conference's Mid-Atlantic Division with a record of 9-0-1 (29 points). The Future's Dominic Oduro and Cristian are tied for second in the PDL in points. Neagu is currently leading the PDL in assists with seven.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournament of its type in the world.

The Mariners' next regular season match is July 1 when Virginia Beach hosts Puerto Rico at the Sportsplex at 7:30 p.m. Again, soccer players wearing their soccer jerseys get in free and all other tickets are just $5.
