Vancouver Whitecaps News Release

Playing their fifth game in nine days, the Whitecaps battled to a scoreless tie against rivals Seattle Sounders before a sellout crowd of 5,722. The evenly played match could have gone either way, but the final say was had by the goalkeepers, as the two teams shared the points. All three games between these teams this season have been tied.

Goalkeeper Mike Franks made four saves of 11 shots to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Franks was named Umbro Player of the Game.

Vancouver's record is now 6-3-3 for 22 points, keeping them in second place, now three points up on Montreal, Rochester, and Seattle, and four back of leaders Richmond Kickers. Seattle is 5-1-4 for 19 points, in fourth place. In the tight First Division standings, only a point divides third place from eighth.

Scoring Summary:

No goals

Game Notes:

Seattle striker Roger Levesque had a great chance at 7' when he broke in down the right, but Mike Franks came out and smothered the shot. Back the other way, Carlo Corazzin had a good chance at 8', but headed just over the bar.

Seattle goalkeeper Preston Burpo was called upon to make several saves, including a first time blast from Dave Morris at the edge of the box at 32' that was right at the keeper, and a hard curling shot from Martin Nash on the right at 47' that was well held.

Jason Jordan twice made a brilliant spin-a-rama move just to the left of goal to beat his marker cleanly. He did it first at 70' but his cross then went behind everyone. The second time at 85', he went for a goal himself, but from a tight angle could not squeeze his shot past Burpo at the near post from a yard away.

Mike Franks made his biggest save at 84' going down to stop a first-time shot from Roger Levesque.

Seattle finished the game a player down, after midfielder Leighton O'Brien was shown his second yellow card at 89'. The son of former Whitecap Fran O'Brien, the 2002 league MVP was on a short-term loan to Seattle from Real Salt Lake of MLS.

Steve Klein came off at minute 56. Until that point, he had played every minute of every game this season. His streak ends at 1,136 minutes.

Forward Ian Fuller came on at 55' for his Whitecaps home debut.

Steve Kindel got the start, to extend his consecutive games played streak to 49.
