U.S. National Team News Release
BEMIDJI, Minn. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Bemidji State University, 6-3, here tonight. Team USA received goals from Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) and Ryan Bourque (Boxford, Mass.), while Cam Fowler (Farmington Hills, Mich.) recorded two assists.
After Matt Read put Bemidji State ahead, 1-0, just 1:25 into the game, Lynch followed a rebound off of a Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot and put it past netminder Orlando Alamano to knot the score at 3:49 with a power-play marker. Matt Paluso scored at 6:33 for the Beavers and Read added his second goal to make it 3-1 at 15:36. With just 1:33 remaining in the period, Jon Merrill (Brighton, Mich.) sent a head-man pass to Ryan who fired a shot through a screen and past Alamano from the top of the faceoff circles to draw Team USA within one.
In the second stanza, the Beavers made it 5-2 after goals from Shea Walters and Brett Tamane.
Tyler Lehrke added a goal for Bemidji State at 15:56 of the final frame. Just 44 seconds later, Fowler sent the puck to A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), who fed Bourque rushing down the wing. Bourque made a move around the defender and snapped a shot that beat Alamano on the short side to account for the 6-3 final.
U.S. netminder Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) made 36 saves on the night.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to home ice on Friday (March 6) when it takes on North American Hockey League North Division foe Traverse City North Stars at 7 p.m. ET.
