U.S. Nat'l U17 Team Falls to Mahoning Valley, 4-1

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Despite pouring 40 shots on goal, the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Mahoning Valley Phantoms here tonight.

The Phantoms jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Josh Bussel found the back of the net just 1:29 into the game. Brad Smith doubled the advantage at 5:34. Mahoning Valley also got goals from Jordy Trottier and Brandon Saad to cap the four-goal first period.

Team USA held the Phantoms to just three shots in the second period, but was unable to solve netminder Garrett Bartus in the middle frame.

The U.S. put 20 shots on goal in the third period, however Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) was the only player to put the puck past Bartus. Sam Calabrese (Park Ridge, Ill.) notched an assist on the goal, which came at 14:54.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action on Friday (March 20) in Traverse City, where it will meet the North Stars at 6 p.m. ET. Traverse City and Team USA are currently tied for second place in the NAHL North Division standings.
