ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Goals from Kevin Clare (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Zac Larraza (Scottsdale, Ariz.) were not enough for the U.S. National Under-17 Team as it fell to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 5-2, here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
Clare gave Team USA a 1-0 lead 4:09 into the game when J.T. Miller's (East Palestine, Ohio) long rebound came all the way to Clare who rifled a shot through Adam Reid's (Chino Hills, Calif.) screen and netminder Nick Grosenick from the left point. Cason Hohmann answered back for Cedar Rapids when he intercepted a pass at the U.S. blue line, broke in alone and slid a backhanded shot under goaltender Matt McNeely (Burnsville, Minn.) at 6:42. Peter Sakaris gave the RoughRiders a 2-1 lead when his shot squeaked under McNeely from the left side at the 16:18 mark. With just 47 seconds remaining in the period and Cedar Rapids on a power play, David Boehm chipped a rebound past McNeely to double the advantage.
Team USA answered just 29 seconds into the second stanza when Tyler Biggs (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent a cross-crease feed to Larraza, who tapped it in from the left side. Cedar Rapids regained the two-goal lead when Zach Lehrke collected a rebound and wristed the puck past McNeely at 3:36 for a 5-on-3 power-play goal. Just 1:13 later and with Cedar Rapids still on the power play, Jayson Megna put the puck puck past McNeely to make it 5-2. The U.S. netminder made 21 saves in the period.
McNeely turned aside each of the 10 shots he faced in the third frame, but Grosenick did the same to the 12 shots from Team USA, allowing the RoughRiders to skate away with the 5-2 win.
McNeely closed out the night with 44 saves.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action Friday (Feb. 26) when it takes on the Indiana Ice at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube at 7:05 p.m. EST.
