TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Despite out shooting its opponent by a 29-14 margin, the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Traverse City North Stars, 3-0, here tonight at Centre Ice Arena.
The North Stars got on the board late in the first period when Garrett Thompson tipped Kyle Bonis' shot past netminder Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich.) with just 1:29 to play. Team USA peppered Traverse City netminder Brandon Stephenson with 11 shots in the opening frame but were unable to find the back of the net.
Traverse City doubled its lead early in the middle frame after Jarrod LaBelle's wraparound goal at the 1:56 mark.
In the final stanza, Kyle Jean added a shorthanded tally to make it 3-0. Team USA could not solve Stephenson who turned aside all 10 shots he saw in the third period to preserve the shutout.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in action next week as it takes on North American Hockey League North Division foe Marquette at home. Team USA will play Friday (October 17) and Saturday night at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, with both games scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET.
