ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Mahoning Valley Phantoms here tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
"It was a tough game for our team to lose tonight," said USA head coach John Hynes. "We carried the play at times and had good chances, but we couldn't get the puck past Phantom goaltender Garrett Bartus."
Mahoning Valley scored the lone goal on the power play with just under eight minutes to play in the third period. With Team USA's Joe Marciano (Alta Loma, Calif.) in the box for interference, Trent Bonnet took a cross-ice pass from Adam Snead and fired a shot from the blueline that handcuffed U.S. netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) for the only goal of the contest.
Bartus earned the win in net for the Phantoms, stopping 44 shots, including 18 in both the second and third periods. Maricic took the loss, finishing with 18 saves.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team (4-1-0-1) will play its first game against NCAA Division I competition when it travels to the University of Maine next Saturday (Oct. 6) at 7 p.m. EDT.
