U.S. National Team News Release
MARQUETTE, Mich. - Despite battling back from a five-goal deficit to get within one, the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to North American Hockey League North Division-opponent Marquette by a 6-4 count here tonight at the Lakeview Arena. Team USA now holds a 2-0-0-2 season record, while the Rangers stand at 4-0-0-2.
"The guys did a good job of sticking together and trying to fight back after some adversity," said Ron Rolston, head coach of Team USA. "Our challenge is learning consistency and we just got ourselves too far in the hole tonight. We'll get back at it on Monday and look foward our next game."
The Rangers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a Joe Guenther tally at the 1:31 mark, then gained a 5-0 advantage before the end of the opening frame. Tyler Mathews was next to score, tapping in a rebound during a 5-on-3 at 11:08. Derek Grogan followed it up with another power-play tally from the right point just 24 seconds later as Marquette went up 3-0. Garrett Ladd and Josh Bussell then scored at 13:14 and 14:17, respectively, for the five-goal cushion heading into the second frame.
Team USA charged back in the middle stanza, beating Marquette goaltender Matt Brooker three times to cut its deficit to 5-3. David Valek (Orem, Utah) scored the United States' first two goals, first at 6:09, then again exactly two minutes later with a backhander from the left side that sailed over Brooker's right shoulder and landed inside the far post. The third U.S. goal came at 16:29 during a two-man advantage when Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) put one in from the right point.
Team USA's Zach Golembiewski (Port Huron, Mich.) scored midway through the final frame to bring the United States to within one goal of the Rangers. Shore sent a centering pass to Golembiewski, who put it top shelf from the slot at 11:16 for a 5-4 score. The Rangers added another tally at 14:39 to account for the 6-4 final score.
U.S. netminder Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska) made 32 saves in the losing effort, while Brooker stopped 23 for Marquette.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns home to the Ann Arbor Ice Cube for its next game on Friday, Oct. 5, versus the Traverse City North Stars of the North American Hockey League North Division. The opening faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT.
