U.S. National Under-18 Team Tops Topeka, 3-0

BLAINE, Minn. - Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) recorded a shutout and Robbie Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) notched two goals as the U.S. National Under-18 Team topped the Topeka Roadrunners, 3-0, here today at the 2007 North American Hockey League Showcase.

"We really used our speed and skill tonight," said John Hynes, head coach of Team USA. "We were able to get all five players involved in the offensive zone and we got another steady performance from Maricic in goal."

After a scoreless first period, Ryan Hegarty (Arlington, Mass.) gave Team USA the lead when his slap shot from the left point beat goaltender Bryce Merriam at 4:48 of the second stanza. Czarnik doubled Team USA's lead after firing a wrist shot from the left face-off circle past the outstretched glove of Merriam at 8:24. David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) sent a pass to Czarnik who one-timed a shot past Merriam just three seconds into a power play to give Team USA a 3-0 advantage heading into the final frame.

Maricic stopped all 30 shots he faced, including 13 in the third period, to earn the shutout victory.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team concludes the 2007 NAHL Showcase tomorrow against the Southern Minnesota Express at 4:45 p.m. CDT at the Schwan Super Rink.

NOTES: The U.S. National Under-18 Team is now 2-0-0-1 at the 2007 NAHL Showcase ... David Wohlberg recorded two assists in the game ... With the win, Nick Maricic improved to 3-0-0-0 overall this season ... Team USA has scored at least one power-play goal in all three of its games at the Showcase.
