
U.S. National Under-18 Team Tops Northern Michigan, 5-2

MARQUETTE, Mich. Led by multi-point efforts from three different players, the U.S. National Under-18 Team secured a 5-2 victory over Northern Michigan University at the Berry Events Center Saturday night. Team USA netminder Joe Cannata (Wakefield, Mass.) made 21 saves and picked up his seventh win of the year.
David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) gave Team USA a 1-0 advantage just 1:06 into the contest with an unassisted goal.
Team USA built a two-goal lead during the first 37 seconds of the second frame as David Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) chipped in his team's second unassisted goal of the night. Patrick Gaul (Pittsburgh, Pa.) netted what proved to be the game-winning goal for the U.S. National Under-17 Team at the 4:42 mark of the middle frame, thanks to an assist from Jeremy Morin (Auburn, N.Y.).
Morin broke the game open for Team USA with his power-play goal just 28 seconds into the third period. Warsofsky and Jordan Schroeder (Prior Lake,
Minn.) each were credited with assists on the goal.
Northern Michigan finally got on the board at 8:36 of the session when Erik Spady pitched in an even-strength goal for the Wildcats.
Gaul registered his second goal of the evening, with a man advantage, at the 11:19 mark of the final frame. Nick Pryor (Woodbury, Minn.) and Colin Moore (Medfield, Mass.) added their names to the score sheet by providing assists on Gaul's tally.
Derek May chipped in more goal for the home team at 14:15, but NMU was unable to get any closer during the final 5:45 of regulation.
Wildcat goaltender Reid Ellingson stopped 19 shots in the loss.
Team USA finished with two power-play goals in eight chances, while Northern Michigan was held scoreless in six opportunities with a man advantage.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team (15-16-1-1) travels to South Bend, Ind., for a game against the University of Notre Dame next Friday (Feb. 1) at the Joyce Center. Opening faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. ET. Team USA will then head to Varkas, Finland, for the 2008 Five Nations Tournament Feb. 6-10.
