U.S. National Team News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. Jerry D'Amigo (Binghamton, N.Y.) broke a 3-3 deadlock in the seventh round of the shootout to give the U.S. National Under-17 Team a 3-2 win over the Traverse City North Stars at Center Ice Arena Saturday night. Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) turned away 21 of the 23 shots he faced in his first game with the U.S. National Under-17 Team in the 2007-08 campaign.
Team USA vaulted out to a 2-0 lead in the first 6:23 of the game with goals from Beau Schmitz (Howell, Mich.) and Zach Golembiewski (St. Clair, Mich.).
Schmitz netted his fourth marker of the season just 1:07 into the first period off an assist from Nick Mattson (Chanhassen, Minn.). Golembiewski notched his second goal of the weekend, and his ninth of the year, a little over five minutes later. Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and Mattson each picked up helpers on the goal.
Eric O'Hearn scored for Traverse City at the 15:24 mark of the opening stanza to make it a 2-1 game.
Neither team scored in the second period, but Kyle Bonis gained the equalizer for the North Stars at 8:10 of the third period.
The score remained 2-2 as the third-period horn sounded, forcing an overtime session. Team USA posted a 7-1 shot advantage in the extra frame, but neither team was able to light up the scoreboard.
In the shootout, D'Amigo put the game out of reach after Eric McLintock's seventh-round was unsuccessful for Traverse City.
Maricic moved to 1-0 for Team USA with the win. Chris Paliafito made 28 saves in the loss for the North Stars, and saw his season record fall to 3-6-5.
The U.S. National Under-17 Team (23-22-1) hosts the Traverse City North Stars at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube this Tuesday (Jan. 29). Opening faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
