U.S. National Under-18 Team Continues NCAA Division I Competition

THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-18 Team travels to Erie, Pa., to take on the Mercyhurst College Lakers tonight (Jan. 31) at 7 p.m.

U.S. HEAD COACH JOHN HYNES: John Hynes is in his third season with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. Hynes has spent time as an assistant coach at the University of Massachuttes Lowell and the University of Wisconsin. Hynes has amassed a career record with the NTDP of 87-46-8.

U.S. HEAD COACH JOHN HYNES ON PLAYING MERCYHURST: "It is great experience for us to play three games in five nights as the quick adjustment and execution time will help us prepare for the World (Under-18) Championships in April where our schedule will be similar."

LAST TIME THEY MET: First Meeting

USA PLAYER TIDBITS: USA leading scorer Patrick Kane topped last seasons goal total of 32 last weekend (Jan. 27-28) , he currently has a line of 33-30--63 in 37 games played this season. Through 37 games last season, Under-18 Team leading scorer Phil Kessel had 73 points (39-3--73), Kessel finished with 98 (52-46--98).

GAME NOTES: Team USA is 2-1-0 against teams from the Atlantic Hockey Conference (Canisius, RIT) this season ... The U.S. National Under-18 Team has faced seven of the top 15 Division I teams this season.

OFFENSIVE SHOWCASE: The U.S. National Under-18 Team has averaged 6.6 goals per game over their last 10 games and 9.4 goals per over the last five.

UP NEXT: Team USA travels to Moscow, Russia, to participate in the 2006 Five Nations Tournament to face Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden and Russia from February 7-15, 2006.

LAST WEEKEND: The U.S. National Under-18 Team played host to Division I Rochester Institute of Technology for a two game series. Both games displayed high-powered offense from both teams that resulted in a weekend split. Box scores from the weekend are below.

NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: University of Minnesota freshman Ryan Stoa (Bloomington, Minn.) recorded three points (1-2--3) to lead the third-ranked Gophers past top-ranked Wisconsin on Friday night (Jan. 27) ... During the University of Michigan versus Michigan State 5-5 battle on Saturday night (Jan. 28) six different NTDP alumni recorded points, four for Michigan and two for State.

ABOUT THE NTDP: Founded in 1997, USA Hockey's National Team Development Program was created to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and success in their future hockey careers. The program has been instrumental in capturing gold medals at the 2002 and 2005 IIHF World Under-18 Championships and the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship. This past summer 15 NTDP alumni were selected in the NHL Entry Draft. In the seven years NTDP players have been eligible for the NHL draft, 107 players have been selected.
