ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Mahoning Valley Phantoms extended their two game winning streak Friday night as they topped the U.S. National Under-17 Team 7-1 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
Mahoning Valley jumped out to the lead with 3 goals in the first period. Mike Cieslak (Penfield, N.Y.) started the second period strong for Team USA with a breakaway goal 48 seconds into the period. But, that was all the scoring Team USA could muster as Phantoms goalie Ryan Zapolski turned away 33 of 34 Team USA shots.
The Phantoms tallied three more goals in the second period. Josh Unice (Toledo, Ohio) replaced Team USA starter Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) to start the third period and stopped 15 of 16 Phantoms shots.
"We just didn't come to play tonight and Mahoning Valley did," said Head Coach Ron Rolston. "Tonight was a good wake up call for our players."
Tomorrow night The U.S. National Under-18 Team will take on Canisius College at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube at 7:05 p.m. Tickets for all home games are $6 for adults and $4 for students.
