Ann Arbor, Michigan - Drew Satterley scored twice and added an assist and Anthony Ciraulo added a goal and three assists to lead the Mahoning Valley Phantoms to a 7-1 win over the U.S. National Under-17 Team in North American Hockey League (NAHL) action at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Linemate Marc Menzione also contributed three assists.

The Phantoms (3-2-0) jumped on U.S. goaltender Bobby Phillips early. Mike Maltese won a faceoff in the Phantoms zone, and then quickly snapped a pass to Owen Meyer at the blue line. Meyer caught both U.S. defensemen out of position, skating past both of them in the neutral zone, and beat Phillips with a breakaway backhand at 4:02 of the opening period to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead.

It became 2-0 just two minutes later, off another faceoff win and some pinpoint passing. Anthony Ciraulo drew the puck back to Drew Fortney on the right point in the U.S. zone. Fortney passed diagonally to Marc Menzione on the left goal line. Menzione passed back to Ciraulo behind the goal, who found Drew Satterley cutting into the low slot. Ciraulo fed Satterley and beat Phillips, also with a backhand on the stick side.

With 7:12 remaining in the opening period, Matt Quigley went behind the U.S. goal from the left wing. As he curled out from behind the right side, he backhanded a centering pass that deflected off U.S. defenseman Colby Cohen's skate and into the goal for a 3-0 lead.

The U.S. (10-4-2) got on the board in the first minute of the second period. Mike Cieslak scored on a breakaway, just beating Phantoms goaltender Ryan Zapolski with a forehand past his left skate at the 48 second mark. But like they did against Cleveland last Sunday, they didn't let the U.S. get back in the game and quickly regained control.

Brent Dexter scored on a shorthanded breakaway at 11:24 to make it a three-goal lead again at 4-1. 52 seconds later, off a faceoff win by Ciraulo, defenseman Doug Leaverton scored his first goal of the season, firing a rising wrist shot through traffic from the right point to make it 5-1. The Phantoms top line connected again when Satterley scored his second of the game, assisted by Menzione and Ciraulo with 2:58 remaining in the second period for a 6-1 lead.

"It comes down to character and these boys have it. We're still making some early season mistakes, but character comes through and carries you. We told the players this week of a great hockey quote; ‘Hockey's a man's game. The team with the most real men wins the game.' Hopefully it carries through for us into the season," said Phantoms Head Coach Bob Mainhardt.

Phillips was replaced by Josh Unice to start the third period. Ciraulo broke him in early, scoring on the powerplay at the 4:12 mark to wrap up the scoring. In all, 10 Phantoms registered points, outshooting the U.S. 38-34 and successfully killing all three U.S. powerplay opportunities. Zapolski finished with 33 saves to improve his record to 2-1-0.

The Phantoms now travel to Parma for a weekend series against the Cleveland Jr. Barons. Faceoff on Saturday begins at 7:30pm, while Sunday's matinee starts at 3:30pm.
