U.S. National Under-17 Team Falls to NAHL-Leading Phantoms, 4-1

BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The U.S National Under-17 Team fell to the North American Hockey League-leading Mahoning Valley Phantoms, 4-1, tonight at the Boardman Ice Zone.

In the opening period the U.S. outshot the Phantoms 18-to-10 in an action-filled 20 minutes, but were unable to beat Mahoning netminder Ryan Zapolski. The Phantoms struck first when Nathan Longpre tallied a power-play goal with 3:37 remaining in the second period to gain the 1-0 advantage.

Mahoning Valley came out flying to open the final frame and gained the 2-0 lead 54 seconds into the third period on a Dustin Cloutier goal. The Phantoms gained the 3-0 advantage 9:27 into the third stanza when Jason Simota was able to beat U.S. netminder Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.). Team USA got on the scoreboard 17 seconds later when Justin Florek (Marquette, Mich.) beat Zapolski off a feed from linemate Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Phantoms added another tally with 7:58 remaining in the contest to seal the game.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will have another shot at the Phantoms tomorrow night at 7 p.m. EDT at the Ice Zone in the final game of the two-game set with Mahoning Valley.
