TRAVERSE CITY - Drew Pierson scored a pair of goals and Mike Jarboe made 30 saves in 32 chances to lift the visiting Alpena IceDiggers to a 5-2 win on Friday at Centre ICE arena over the Traverse City North Stars in a contest the Stars almost had to win.
The Stars fell nine points behind fourth place Marquette for the final NAHL North playoff berth after the Rangers topped Fargo- Moorhead on Friday.
After Pierson scored the lone goal of the first period, and Eric Roman made it 2-0 just minutes into the second - both on unassisted tallies - Sabastion Kimmel cut the visitors' deficit in half just seven seconds later. Pierson and Ricardo Yesue closed out the second period with Alpena goals and the Diggers never looked back.
Jimmy McCusker made it a 5-1 affair just :17 into the third before Matt Hughes' team-leading 15th of the season made it a three-goal final.
Kyle Jendra and Stefan Shively split time in net for the North Stars, combining for 23 saves in 28 chances.
The teams face off again on Saturday in Alpena in a 7 p.m. contest.
