U.S. National Team News Release

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Drew Shore (Denver, Colo.) scored the lone goal in the seventh round of the shootout to give the U.S. National Under-17 team a 4-3 win over Mahoning Valley at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube on Friday night.

"As usual, this was another hard-fought game with Mahoning Valley," said U.S. National Under-17 Coach Ron Rolston. "We were fortunate to come away with a goal in the shootout to gain valuable gain in the North American Hockey League standings."

Team USA grabbed an early 1-0 on a goal by Kyle Palmieri (Montvale, N.J.). Palmieri took a feed from Drew Shore in the slot and fired a quick shot that beat Phantoms' netminder Garrett Bartus for his first tally of the game.

Team USA tallied back-to-back second period goals to take a 3-0 lead. Richie Crowley (Canton, Mass.) scored on a knuckle ball shot from just outside blue line that took a funny bounce and beat the Mahoning Valley netminder for his second goal of the season. Palmieri tallied his second goal of the game on a quick shot as Team USA increased the lead to 3-0.

Mahoning Valley cut the deficit to 3-1 with a goal by Johnny Meo at the 12:32 mark of the middle stanza. The Phantoms pulled within one, 3-2, just 5:09 into the final stanza on a goal by Scott Moser that just got past USA netminder Adam Murray (Anchorage, Alaska). The Phantoms tied the game on a goal by Brent Dexter with a little under eight minutes to play in the game.

Both teams had numerous opportunities in the extra session. Murray made a glove save on Mahoning Valley's Meo with 3:10 left to preserve the tie. Moments later, Bartus stopped USA's Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) on a point blank shot to help send the game to a shootout.

Murray finished with 27 shots to earn his first win of the season for Team USA. Bartus finished with 40 stops in a losing effort.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team (4-2) and Mahoning Valley will meet again on Saturday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.
