Alexandria Blizzard News Release

ALEXANDRIA, Minn.-- Ever think a team that was 1-for-51 on its power play through six games could turn a 180 after two weeks without even playing a game? Well, that's exactly what unfolded Friday night as the Alexandria Blizzard defeated the Alaska Avalanche 6-3 before 603 at the Runestone Community Center in the Blizzard's home-opener.

The Avalanche got on the board early in the first period, scoring just 9 minutes into the game. Then the Blizzard's David Hines (Sartell) opened up the scoring frenzy with the team's second power play goal of the season, beginning Alexandria's four-goal scoring streak. Mikael Lickteig (Little Falls) and Joe Knoepke (Rochester) each tallied two points on the night, Lickteig collecting two goals, and Knoepke picking up one goal and one assist in his second game of the year. Demonstrating excellent teamwork and the impact of two solid weeks of powerplay practice, Alexandria finished the game 3-for-8 with the man advantage, versus Alaska's 1-for-8.

Alexandria outshot Alaska 37-26. Goaltender Ryan Leets (Kentwood, Mich.) picked up 23 saves on the night, advancing his save percentage to .901. Former Blizzard defender Kent Detlefsen, who has spent less than two weeks with his new team, scored twice for the Avalanche - one shorthanded, the other on the power play.

The Blizzard continues action at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 in Alexandria to complete its weekend series against the Avalanche.
