BRUNSWICK, Maine - Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) recorded five assists as the U.S. National Under-18 Team rolled past Bowdoin College, 10-2, here tonight. With the victory, Team USA took first place at the four-team Colby-Bowdoin Classic.
Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) put Team USA on the board just 2:27 into the game after he converted on Michael Mersch's (Park Ridge, Ill.) feed from behind the net. At 10:06, Frankie Simonelli (Bensenville, Ill.) made it 2-0 after he collected a rebound off of a Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) shot and flipped the puck just under the crossbar. With 2:49 to play in the opening period, Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.) fed a streaking Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) who wired a shot past the outstretched blocker of netminder Richard Nerland.
Bowdoin stormed back with two goals early in the second stanza. Brian Fry made it 3-1 when his shot beat goaltender Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) just 3:02 into the frame. Daniel Weiniger's power-play goal at 7:29 brought the Polar Bears within a goal. Arnold made it 4-2, when his wrist shot from the high slot beat Nerland five-hole at 15:25. Just 2:04 later, Czarnik dropped the puck to Shore who fed Kevin Hayes (Dorchester, Mass.) for a one-timer into the open goal.
Team USA rode a five-goal third period to pull away from Bowdoin. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) took a pass from Czarnik, skated across to the high slot and wired a shot over Nerland's blocker at 7:40 to start the scoring barrage. Zucker added a second goal, on the power play, at 10:11 to make it 7-2. Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) potted a power-play goal of his own at 14:43 to put Team USA ahead by six. Shore and Hayes each tallied at 16:52 and 18:07, respectively, to account for the 10-2 final.
Campbell made 29 saves to earn his eighth win of the season.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to its United States Hockey League Schedule Friday against the league's best club, the Omaha Lancers, at the Omaha Civic Auditorium at 7:05 p.m. CST.
