The U.S. Under-18 Team went 1-1 on the week as they hosted the 8th ranked Division III College, the Manhattanville Valiants, Friday, January 2 and Saturday, January 3, 2004.
Friday, Jan. 2 â Manhattanville 1, USA 2
Brandon Secro (Canton, MI) scored the game-winning goal, assisted by Chad Kolarik (Abington, PA) and Matt Auffery (Evans Mills, NY), with just :44 left in the second period, as the US National Development Team Program U-18 squad defeated the visiting Manhattanville College Valiants, 2-1.

Saturday, Jan. 3 â Manhattanville 7, USA 6 OT
In a game of momentum Manhattanville and the US Team traded goal-scoring streaks of three, five and four with the New York showing heroic valor earning a comeback win. The US got on the board first as Joe Grimaldi tallied at 6:08 of the first session. Manhattanville, followed with three consecutive in the first period (Dan Law, Brad Olson and BJ Greaves) with two coming via the power play. The US stormed back with five straight even strength scores as Jared Palmer, Chad Kolarik (twice), Dan Fardig and Mike Brennan each lit the lamp. Trailing by three with 13:55 left in the final stanza the Valiants rallied to tie the score in regulation and win in overtime as freshman Jordan Menzies scored on a one-timer from the right slot.
"This is a great win for us," said Manhattanville Head Coach Keith Levinthal. "I am very happy we can play this well against great competition."

THIS WEEK'S ACTION The U-18 squad travels to Sault Ste. Marie, MI to face the Lake Superior State Lakers of the CCHA on January 9th and to Gaylord, MI to take on the Soo (Ontario) Thunderbirds of the NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) at the Otsego County Sports Complex.
LAKE SUPERIOR STATE
The Lakers, idle during the past two weekends, have posted a 6-7-5 overall record and a 4-7-3 mark in the CCHA. They have quadrupled their win production in the CCHA compared to this point last season when they had yet to win a conference game. LSSU finished one win shy of .500 during the first half of the season and posted its best first-half record since going 9-11 prior to Christmas in 2000-01. At this time last season, the Lakers were 3-14-1 overall and averaging 1.3 goals per game. Bo Cheesman leads the team in scoring with 8-5â13 points with a +3 plus/minus. Dominic Osman is second on the team with 12 points (7-5). Junior goaltender (Vancouver Canucks draft choice) Matt Violin sports a 3-5-2 record with a 3.21 goals-against average and .874 save percentage. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis has compiled a 2-2-2 mark with a league-leading 1.89 goals-against average and league-leading .933 save percentage.

SOO THUNDERBIRDS
The Soo (Ontario) Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) have posted a 17-6-4-1 record. Leading the team is Salt Lake City, UT native DJ Jelitto with 22 goals and 24 assists in 27 games. The majority of time in net has gone to Mike Downer who, in 23 games has posted a 3.15 goals against average and a .881 save percentage and a 13-5-2 record.

In St. John's Newfoundland the U.S. Under-17 Team finished the 2004 World U-17 Hockey Challenge with a 3-3 record and earned a fourth place finish.

The United States National Team skated to a 5-1 victory over Slovakia in the first game of the preliminary The U.S. were led by Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, Mich.) and Nick Foligno (Hummelstown, Pa.), who each notched a goal and an assist in Team USA's victory.

The U -17 Team skated to 10-3 victory against Team Atlantic in its second game of the preliminary round at the 2004 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Seven different scorers lit the lamp for Team USA.

The U-17 Team suffered a loss in its third game of the preliminary round at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, dropping a 4-1 decision to Team Quebec. Nathan Gerbe (Oxford, Mich.) was the lone scorer for the US on a feed from Nick Foligno (Hummelstown, Pa.) on the power play

The United States National Under-17 Team was defeated by Pacific, 7-4, in the semifinal game at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the loss sent Team USA to the bronze-medal game where it will face Quebec. The two teams met in the preliminary round, with Quebec earning the win.

Sunday, Jan.4 â USA 2, Quebec3 Bronze Medal Game
The United States National Under-17 Team was defeated by Quebec, 3-2, in the bronze-medal game at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. It was the second meeting of the two teams in the tournament, both times Quebec found victory. Quebec was led by goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur, who made 50 saves in the win.

NEXT ACTION
The US Under-17 Team will head to Orland Park, IL, January 15-18, 2004 to resume play in the North American Hockey League as they play in the Windy City Showcase. The U-17's will face the Springfield (MO) Spirit, Minnesota Blizzard, Wichita Falls Rustlers and the Texarkana Bandits. All games at the Artic Ice Arena in Orland Park.
