
U.S. Junior Teams Improve to 6-0-0 At National Junior Evaluation Camp

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Two U.S. split squads comprised of 43 Under-20 athletes eligible for the 2006 National Junior Team improved their combined record to 6-0-0 against teams from Finland and Sweden here tonight at USA Hockey's 2006 National Junior Evaluation Camp. Team White defeated Sweden by a score of 5-3 Friday evening, while Team Blue topped Finland 4-1 in the late game.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the first period against Sweden, Team White rallied to tie the game with quick power-play goals from Brian Strait (Waltham, Mass.) and Justin Abdelkader (Muskegon, Mich) in the first two minutes of the second stanza.
Sweden grabbed the lead again on a power-play goal at the 9:28 mark of the second period, but David Fischer (Apple Valley, Minn.) notched his first goal of the tournament to even the score at 3-3 heading into the second intermission.
In the third period, Team White's Trevor Lewis (Murray, Utah) scored the game-winning goal while sliding on his knees at the 10:07 mark, and Pat Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.) added a power-play goal of his own to seal the game.
Alex Stalock (St. Paul, Minn.) went the distance between the pipes for Team White and recorded 21 saves to record his first victory of the tournament.
In the night's second game, Team Blue jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on power-play goals from Taylor Chorney (Hastings, Minn.) and Nate Gerbe (Oxford, Mich.) at the 5:31 and 7:01 marks, respectively.
Finland made it a one-goal game in the second period on a power-play tally at the 5:08 mark, but Team Blue would score twice in the third period to claim victory. Mike Carman (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored his first goal of the tournament at 1:21 and Bobby Ryan (Cherry Hill, N.J.) capped off the scoring at the 10:42 mark of the final stanza.
Team Blue netminder Jeff Zatkoff (Chesterfield, Mich.) stopped 19 shots to earn the victory.
The 2006 National Junior Evaluation Camp continues tomorrow when Team White takes on Sweden at 1 p.m. EDT, while Team Blue faces Sweden at 4 p.m. EDT.
