ANN ARBOR, Mich. â The U.S. Under 17 Team skated to a 3-1 victory over the Toledo Ice Diggers Tuesday night (Feb. 22). After a scoreless first period, the U.S. National Under-17 Team drew first blood at the 3:22 mark of the second period. Erik Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.) found the back of the net on the power play. This unassisted power-play goal would be the only scoring in the period. The Under-17s answered again at 3:22 of period three as Luke Popko (Skillman, N.J.) delivered, with helpers going to Greg Squires (White Plains, N.Y.) and Danny Fardig (Ann Arbor, Mich.).
The Toledo Ice Diggers narrowed the U.S. lead to one until Michael Carman put the game away with an empty net goal at 19:48 of the final period. U.S. goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) pushed aside 32 of 33 shots.
