Two Stars Hurlers Named Brewers Minor League Co-Pitchers of the Month

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Two of the Huntsville Stars' All-Stars can add another award to their resumes. Starting pitcher Tyler Thornburg and reliever Jesus Sanchez were named the Milwaukee Brewers' Minor League Co-Pitchers of the Month for May.

Thornburg compiled a 5-0 record with a 2.97 ERA in six games for the month of May. In 36.1 innings, he struck out 27 batters. The 23-year-old is 8-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 13 starts for the Stars this season, 4th best in the Southern League. He is tied for the league lead in wins and has the highest winning percentage (.889) of all Southern League pitchers. Thornburg ranks in the top five in the league in games started (13), strikeouts (71), opponents' batting average (.212) and WHIP (1.08). He's allowed the second fewest baserunners per nine innings (9.96) of all starting pitchers in the league. The Texas native was selected by the Brewers in the third round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft. He entered the 2012 season as the fourth-best prospect in the Brewers organization, according to Baseball America.

Sanchez has been dominate coming out of the bullpen for the Stars all season. During the month of May, he was 1-0 with a 0.56 ERA in 10 appearances. He allowed just one earned run in 16 innings of work while keeping opponents to a .170 average. The 24-year-old struck out 19 batters while walking just five and converted all four save opportunities that month. On the season, he is 3-2 with a 1.36 ERA in 26 games and has converted five of six save opportunities. The former catcher was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent in 2004.

Both Sanchez and Thornburg will be honored in a pre-game ceremony before tonight's game against Montgomery at approximately 6:20 p.m.
