Two Southpaws Turn Right to Edenton

March 27, 2017 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Edenton Steamers News Release

The Steamers are excited to announce the signing of two left-handed pitchers. The Teal and Black have inked Cody Eckerson and Cody Maw for the 2017 summer.

Cody Eckerson will come to the Steamers from the Niagara University (NY) Purple Eagles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic conference in NCAA Division I. The 5'8" 170-pound redshirt-junior appeared 12 times in the spring of 2016. The left-hander started 11 of those outings including one complete game in 64.1 innings pitched. The Palmyra, NY native struck out 62 while only walking 16. Opposing batters hit just .249 against him. Eckerson is a lefty with a quick arm that generates fastballs in the mid to upper 80s, using a cutter and change-up as complementary weapons in his arsenal. He has previously battled injury, which has limited his summer exposure.

But Eckerson looks to put together a quality spring and summer in 2017, bringing ample command and experience to his projection in the rotation. Eckerson is in a weekend-starter role this season for the Purple Eagles. Through his first 20 frames this spring, he has fanned 18 and permitted only two extra-base hits, both doubles, to the tune of a 2.70 ERA.

Cody Maw will come to the 2017 Steamers from the Charleston Southern University Buccaneers out of the Big South in NCAA Division I. The redshirt-sophomore spent the 2016 summer in the Great Lakes League with the Licking County Settlers. The 6'0" 165-pound left-hander appeared nine times for the Settlers. He started eight games and posted a 3.35 ERA and .95 WHIP in 48.1 innings pitched. Opponents hit only .228 and had a slugging average of .287 against him. The Summerville, SC native compiled 37 punchouts to a mere five bases on balls. During the 2016 summer, Maw threw a nine-inning no-hitter on June 10, narrowly missing a perfect game with just one walk. He also started on the mound in the all-star game representing the Settlers and led the circuit in WHIP and walk rate amongst qualified starters.

Maw is a classic finesse lefty who has the ability to dominate with command and mix, working the change-up off the fastball. The latter pitch will sit in the low 80s in contrast to the change from which he gets great differential with the same slot and arm speed. The southpaw was a reliable multi-inning pen arm for CSU last spring. He has now evolved last summer and this spring into a rotation guy even taking the ball the last couple of Fridays. Through his first six appearances in 2017, four have come in a starting role, Maw has posted 24 strikeouts to six walks in 27 innings worked.
