Two Power Play Goals Carry Sundogs to 3-1 Win

November 30, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release

LAREDO, TX - Two power play goals in the first period were enough for the Arizona Sundogs in a 3-1 win over the Laredo Bucks on Wednesday night at Laredo Energy Arena. With the win, the Sundogs jump into fifth place in the Central Hockey League's Berry Conference and pull within one game of the .500 mark on the year.

Jeff Hazelwood and Luke Erickson each scored the first period tallies for Arizona (7-8-3). Hazelwood's from the point with eight minutes left in the frame. Erickson's came on a one-timer in the left circle with 3:57 remaining for his eight of the year and the 99th of his career.

After a scoreless second period, Matt Pierce buried a loose puck in the left circle as the Bucks (5-10-0) cut Arizona's lead to 2-1 with more than 15 minutes left in the third. Both teams traded chances, but it was Adam Smyth who scored the insurance tally for Arizona with 33 seconds left to play. The goal was Smyth's first of the season.

Scott Reid stopped 36 shots for his fifth win of the season. Ryan Rondeau took the loss in his first appearance against the Sundogs this season.

Arizona finished 2-for-8 on the power play while the Bucks went 0-for-6, continuing their woes as the league's worst power play unit.

Arizona was down one skater as Patrick Schafer began a four-game suspension tonight due to Saturday night's second period incident against Rio Grande Valley. The Sundogs have won five of their last seven contests.

The Sundogs continue their road trip on Friday when they visit the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for their third meetings in the last four games. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:30 PM MST.
