January 28, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release
WALLA WALLA, Wash- The Walla Walla Sweets announced the signing of two Mustangs on Thursday morning. After the Sweets had Jarred Zill on the club last year, the Sweets bring two more arms from Cal Poly, Justin Bruihl and Bobby Ay.
Justin Bruihl, a 6-foot 2-inch, 215 pound left-handed pitcher, will be starting his freshman season at Cal Poly come this spring. In high school, for Casa Grande HS in Petaluma, CA, he had a 1-0 record his senior year without allowing an earned run in 17 and 1/3 innings. For the Mustangs, he figures to provide middle relief out of the bullpen his freshman year.
"I've heard that the WCL is a pretty good league," Bruihl said. "A majority of my teammates played in the WCL and said they had a blast and I can't wait to experience summer ball for the first time."
"This summer I am trying to gain velocity on my fastballs a well as commanding it," he added. "I also want to compete and better prepare myself for my 2nd year of college ball."
"Justin Bruihl, a crafty LHP who will be used primarily this year out of the bull pen for SLO," head coach Frank Mutz said. "Justin has a great frame and is only beginning to reach his physical potential. He already is a strike thrower and when more velocity comes, I believe he could dominate the West Coast League. He reminds me of 2015 WCL All Star Easton Lucas."
Bobby Ay, a 6-foot 3-inch, 180 pound right-handed pitcher, also will join the Sweets after his freshman season on the hill for CP. His senior season of high school in Trabuco Canyon, CA (El Toro HS), he went 6-0 with a 2.01 ERA. He will also be a big out of the 'pen for the Mustangs in 2016.
"I've heard the WCL is a tough league but it's a challenge I'm willing to accept," Ay said. "I can't wait to travel out of California for baseball. I'm looking to accomplish a solid ERA for the summer as a starter and help my team win."
"Bobby Ay, a Southern California product has pitched against me in the past when Chaminade HS played Ay's El Toro Chargers in 2014 and 15," Mutz said. "Bobby comes from a great program in our area and is a true competitor. He is a winner and his experience playing in big games will benefit him greatly while pitcher for the Sweets this summer. It's great when you recruit players who you have faced in the past. I'm grateful he in a Sweets uniform this summer, I look forward to finally having him as a teammate."
The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2016 season presented by Columbia REA, on June 3 against the Victoria HarbourCats. Season tickets are on sale now.
