New Haven County Cutters News Release
The New Haven County Cutters picked up two players from the Shreveport Sports of the Central League via trade Wednesday. Coming to the Cutters are outfielder Keto (pronounced KEE-toe) Anderson and pitcher Jerry Knox. Heading off to Shreveport is first baseman Hector Lebron.
Anderson will be penciled in as the starter in centerfield. He has a career .309 batting average and brings considerable speed to the team. A lefthanded hitter, he averaged 20 stolen bases over the past two seasons.
"We expect Keto to be at the top of our lineup," said Manager Mike Church. "We want him to go out and do what he does best. That means getting on base and causing trouble for defenses. We expect 20 to 30 stolen bases from him and to put the ball in play."
A tough out for any pitcher, Anderson was the fifth hardest person to strike out in the Central League last season. He was third in the league in triples, hitting seven three-baggers, while plaing in 92 of the 95 games. He hit .289, and improved his average every month.
Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 13th round of the 1999 draft, the Alabama native has stolen 100 bases in his six-year career.
Knox, a righthander who can work out of the bullpen and as a spot starter, pitched for both Shreveport and Can-Am League rival Brockton last year. He put together a combined record of 1-2 with an earned run average of 3.55.
Lebron was the starting first baseman for the Cutters last season. "We weren't anxious to let Hector go, but his salary demands were well beyond what we felt was appropriate," said Director of Player Procurement Bob Wirz.
In other news on the transaction front, New Haven has picked up sidearm-throwing right-handed reliever Andy Weimer, who pitched for Charleston, SC of the South Atlantic League and Hudson Valley of the New York-Penn League last season. In a combined 23 games, the Tampa Bay farmhand had a 0-1 record with an earned run average of 5.78.
New Haven County now has 17 players under contract.
The Cutters start their season on the road against the Quebec Les Capitales on May 26-29. The first home series is against the Bangor Lumberjacks with the home opener coming on Memorial Day, May 30 at 6:05. Season and group tickets are available at Yale Field or by calling 203 777-5636.
