Arkansas Diamonds News Release
(Bossier-Shreveport, LA) - The CenturyTel Center didn't have a single fan in the seats, but people wouldn't know the difference if they just happened upon the scrimmage between the Arkansas Twisters and the Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. The two teams worked on game situations against one another, and players were just as amped up and excited as they would be if the scrimmage were an actual game with the stands packed with fans.
The scrimmage consisted of two major practices, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The practices were broken down into sessions. The morning practice consisted of one on one drills between the two teams. The offensive/defensive linemen and linebackers worked against one another while quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs worked against one another on the other side of the field. After the lunch break, the excitement picked up when both teams played a situational scrimmage that involved red zone scoring, third and fourth down plays, and regular drives starting at the five yard line. Arkansas found the endzone more than Bossier-Shreveport during the scrimmage. The Twisters used the scrimmage to work both quarterbacks in camp, Brian Villanueva and Collin Drafts. Villanueva finished by completing nine of 19 pass attempts for four touchdowns and two interceptions. He led the team to six touchdowns in six plays during one red zone session. Drafts was 13 of 15 for five touchdowns and zero interceptions. Draft led the Twisters down field on long drives and hit a couple of long touchdown passes.
The best highlight of the afternoon session belonged to veteran fullback Moa Peaua. The 300 pounder scored on a first and goal at the five situation by plowing through the defense which caused a stir through both benches and brought the Twisters side to their feet.
Former Razorback receiver Carlos Ousley led all Twisters players with three total touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing. Dedrick Poole caught two scoring passes, including a 35 yard, over the shoulder catch. Jon Schoonover had one touchdown catch. The Twisters were led defensively by two players. Defensive back Mo Taylor finished the scrimmage with five tackles and three pass breakups. Defensive lineman Darius Robinson added three tackles and three sacks. The Twisters' offensive line gave up just one sack total for the day.
No official score was kept, but both teams were declared winners because both were able to come away from the scrimmage with no major injuries.
The Twisters open the 2008 season on the road against Oklahoma City on April 5th with the home opener on Friday, April 11th against rival and defending af2 champion Tulsa. Season tickets are on sale now and fans can call 975-KICK for more information or log onto www.arkansastwisters.com.
