Twins end week with win

The Winston-Salem Polar Twins played another three-in-three set this past week, traveling to Huntsville on Thursday for a game against the Havoc then to Jacksonville on Friday for a showdown with the Barracudas before returning home to take on the Macon Trax Saturday night. In the three contests, the Polar Twins went 1-2, dropping two on the road but capturing the victory at home.

Thursday, December 16 at Huntsville: On Thursday night, the Polar Twins visited the Huntsville Havoc. Dan Buccella recorded a hat trick and James Patterson and Aaron Lewis both added two goals as Huntsville clobbered the Polar Twins by a 9-3 final. Marcus Willy, Rhett Dudley and Troy Ilijow all scored goals for the Polar Twins while Geoff Rollins had two assists and Cam Werfelman, Steve Lajoie and Ilijow all had one each for Winston-Salem, who fell to 5-14 on the season with the defeat. Jeff Dams and Mike Degurse both had one goal each for the Havoc (9-8). Derek McKinlay, Jason deGuehery and Patterson all had three assists while Lewis had two. Steve Howard, Shawn Breaker, Matt Carmichael and Dams all had one assist each.

Friday, December 17 at Jacksonville: Friday night the Jacksonville Barracudas played host to the Polar Twins, shutting out Winston-Salem by a 4-0 final. George Nistas had two goals and Glenn Crawford had three assists for the Barracudas, who beat the Polar Twins for the second time this season. Brad Federenko put the Barracudas up 1-0 at 3:45 of the first and they never looked back. Tim Schneider also scored in the first period for the Barracudas, who improve to 9-8 on the season. Nistas added two for Jacksonville for the 4-0 final. Terry Denike got credit for the win, stopping all 22 of the shots he faced. Jomar Cruz suffered his fourth loss of the season, stopping 39 of 43 shots.

Saturday, December 18 v. Macon: On Saturday, the Macon Trax visited the LJVM Annex for the first time in Polar Twins franchise history and Winston-Salem made it count, defeating the Trax 4-1. Chester Gallant netted two goals in the victory, which lifted the Polar Twins to a 6-15 record. Troy Ilijow and Trevor Karasiewicz rounded out the scoring for the Polar Twins while Macon’s only goal came on a shorthanded breakaway by Chris Duggan. Jomar Cruz earned his second win of the season, stopping 39 of the 40 shots he faced.

Jomar Cruz standing tall

Despite his 2-4 record, Jomar Cruz has been strong in net for the Polar Twins making 39 saves in each of the three games he played in this week. On Thursday, the former Washington Capitals draft pick stopped 39 of 48 shots against Huntsville in a 9-3 loss. In Jacksonville on Friday he stopped 39 of 43 shots in a 4-0 loss. The third time was truly the charm this week as Cruz stopped 39 shots for the third straight game, this time defeating Macon at home 4-1.

Despite missing seven games due to injury, Marcus Willy is still tied for fifth in defensive scoring with 12 points (2G, 10A). Rhett Dudley comes in tied for 11th with nine points (4G, 5A).
