Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

[WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.] – Jomar Cruz had 53 saves and contributed two assists as he lead the Winston-Salem Polar Twins to a strong 5-1 victory over the Huntsville Havoc Friday night in front of a crowd of 1,190 at LJVM Annex. The Polar Twins improve to 5-12 on the season.

After a scoreless first period, Polar Twins captain Rhett Dudley got things started early in the third, netting his third goal of the season at 1:15 of the frame for a 1-0 lead.

Chester Gallant quickly made it 2-0 with his first of two on the night. Havoc goaltender Adam MacLean made the initial save on Troy Ilijow's shot but Chester Gallant wristed home the rebound for his fifth goal of the season at the 3:35 mark. Gallant put the Polar Twins up 3-0 on a power play tally at 6:27. Cruz left his crease to make the long lead pass to Geoff Rollins who lead the odd man rush into the offensive zone, dropping a pass to Gallant who buried the puck for his second of the night and sixth of the season.

Ilijow gave the Twins the 4-0 lead at 8:33 of the second period, converting on a rebound in the slot for his first goal of the season. Rollins and Kovalcik received assists on the play, which marked the Polar Twins largest lead of the season.

Huntsville closed the gap to three goals on James Patterson's tenth of the season, a power play tally at 10:45 of the middle frame. That would be all the Havoc could get by Cruz, who stopped 53 of 54 shots he faced for his first win of the season. Jason Bone capped the scoring for the Polar Twins with an empty net goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

The Polar Twins conclude their three-in-three stretch tomorrow night when the Columbus Cottonmouths visit LJVM Annex beginning at 7:30 p.m. Fans that bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to FOX8's Gifts for Kids receive $2 off the regular ticket price. All toys collected will be delivered to FOX8 Monday during the 8:00 a.m. hour of the morning news broadcast.
