Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras committed a franchise-record eight turnovers on Friday night in a 59-19 loss to the Georgia Force in front of 6,138 fans at the Charlotte Coliseum. Georgia's defense forced five interceptions and three fumbles as they handed the Cobras their 12th consecutive loss despite a franchise-record 413 all-purpose yards from Bernard Holmes.

Georgia quarterback Leon Murray completed 22-of-32 passes for 221 yards and six touchdowns. Tyronne Jones caught nine passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns and Darryl Hammond added six receptions for 57 yards and a score for the Force.

Holmes performance was the third best single-game showing in Arena Football League history. He had nine receptions for 125 yards, returned nine kickoffs for 216 yards and had two missed field goal returns for 72 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown. It was his franchise record sixth 100-plus receiving yard game of the season. Stewart Patridge completed 14-of-27 passes for 147 yards, but threw four interceptions on the night.

Georgia opened the game's scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run by Jarrick Hillery, but the Cobras responded with a 2-yard rushing score by Jamaal Garman, tying the game at 7-7 after one quarter. The Force took a 14-7 lead on Leon Murray's first touchdown pass of the night, a 16-yard strike to Darryl Hammond. On the ensuing possession, Scott Thomas picked off a Patridge pass and ran it back for a score. The Cobras cut the lead to 21-13 on a Van Johnson touchdown reception before Steve McLaughlin's 25-yard field goal extended the Force lead to 24-13. McLaughlin's next field goal attempt was missed, and Holmes returned it for a 56-yard score as time expired in the half.

The second half was all Georgia as the Cobras committed five turnovers and were outscored 35-0.

SNAKE BITES: Holmes 56-yard missed field goal return was the longest in Cobras history and the longest in the AFL this season...It was just the second missed field goal return for a touchdown in franchise history...His 72 missed field goal return yards for the game is also the most in the league this season...Carolina's five interceptions ties a franchise record set earlier this season...It was the second time in franchise history that the Cobras have been held scoreless in a half (May 26, 2000 vs. Nashville).
