Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

CHICAGO - Charleston's JOHNNY TURMAN (6-4, 220, Pittsburgh), who guided the Swamp Foxes to a team record nine wins in 2003, was named arenafootball2 Rookie of the Year Thursday.

After spending the beginning of the 2003 season with the San Jose Sabercats, Turman joined Charleston three games into the season to turn a 0-3 start into a respectable 9-4 finish. The Swamp Foxes were averaging just 20.3 points per game in their first three games, but under Turman, Charleston's offense was opened up to the tune of 53 points a game.

The offensive unit he guided went from 26th in total offense after the first week to a season high of fourth with two games remaining, finishing in seventh overall. The passing attack moved from 24th after Week 1 to sixth best by season's end.

Despite only playing 13 games, Turman finished the year with 3,138 passing yards and 63 touchdowns while completing 54 percent of his passes. Turman's 241 pass yards per game were the fourth highest total in af2. Turman guided the Foxes to a four-game winning streak to conclude the season, which helped the Foxes to its first-ever winning season.

The former Pittsburgh quarterback earned Week 11 af2 Offensive Player of the Week honors for his eight-touchdowns, no-interception performance versus division foe Norfolk. Turman finished the game 18-of-27 passing for 283 yards and eight scores.

In 2003, Turman set Charleston single season records for touchdowns (63), passing yards (3,138), passes attempted (455), and completions (246). On June 21st, he broke the af2 record for pass attempts in a game with 51 in a 56-46 loss to Macon.
