Turfcats Clinch Texas Championship With 36-12 Win Over Hurricanes

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - It was messy and sloppy and riddled with turnovers but it was still a win for the Austin Turfcats (8-2) as they took down the Texas Hurricanes (1-8) 36-12 to clinch the Southern Indoor Football League's Texas Championship.
The Turfcats jumped out to a 16-0 lead after Keith Clay rushed in for both touchdowns and Nick Lewis and Darrick Wallace added the two-point conversions. Wallace extended the lead early in the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown reception. There were no more scores in the half but instead the teams traded turnovers to finish the half with a 22-0 lead for the Turfcats.
It took the Hurricanes only four plays to find the end zone after Austin fumbled the second half kick off and the Hurricanes recovered. Following turnovers by each team, Turfcats quarterback Gary Cooper found Wallace for a 45-yard touchdown reception and Clay added two points. The Hurricanes answered right away but Clay had the last score of the night with another rushing touchdown. This ended the game with the Turfcats on top 36-12.
"It wasn't pretty but it was a win," said Turfcats head coach Chris Duliban. "We're glad to be named the SIFL Texas Champions but now we need to get back to work and worry about winning the game Saturday and finishing the season on a high note."
Both teams had problems holding on to the ball as Austin finished with four fumbles and three interceptions while Texas had three fumbles and seven interceptions. The teams were forced to go for two after each touchdown due to low ceilings in the arena.
Barrett Dallmeyer was selected the defensive MVP with two sacks and eight hurries. Keith Clay finished with three touchdowns earning him offensive MVP and Tim Cook took the line MVP. Official stats were not available for this game.
The Turfcats return to College Station on Saturday to face the Hurricanes again in the last regular season game for both teams. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. at the Arctic Wolf Ice Center.
