Troy Bruins News Release
Evendale, Ohio - Despite a surging comeback in the third period, the Troy Bruins professional hockey team would fall in overtime for the second consecutive game on the road, this time 5-4 to in-state rival Queen City Storm in a Thursday night contest inside the Sports Plus Arena.
After finding themselves trailing the Storm 3-0 after one period, the Bruins would find their offensive footing to kick off the middle frame, thanks to a setup by Beavercreek native Lee McClure allowing Michael Jordan the ability to break the scoring seal at the 5:47 mark, slashing the home team's lead back to two. A defensive breakdown would create a Queen City goal only :13 later, but the Bruins bounced right back past the midway point in the game thanks to an unassisted goal by veteran Bill Knauber, who was recently aquired off of waivers from the Indiana Blizzard. After forty minues, the Bruins would skate into the dressing room trailing 4-2, while the Storm led in shots on goal 27-20 at the break.
It would be a Bruins period in the third, with the spark from Knauber's goal fresh in their minds, the Troy offensive machinery would dominate throughout the final period of regulation, knocking away at the Queen City lead. Troy's Eric Lang would make it a one goal game at 4:34 before the game began to take on a very aggressive tint, complete with a round of fisticuffs featuring Lang, with both teams battling for control of the game's momentum. As the scoreboard ticked away regulation time, Bruins head coach Rick Szabo pulled starting netminder Rob Mattison with just over one minute remaining, allowing Michael Jordanto score the tying goal with just :53 to go, completing the comeback and sending the game into overtime in front of the hostile Queen City crowd. A 4-4 game after sixty minutes of hockey, Queen City led in shots 38 to 26.
Heading into the five minute sudden death overtime for the second consecutive game, and with last Sunday's tough overtime loss to Indiana fresh in their mind, the Bruins would manage only one shot on goal and would allow the Storm to notch the game winner past Mattisonjust 1:36 in to seal the 5-4 Bruins loss.
Shaking off the three game winless streak, the Bruins finally return home to the comfy confines of the historic Hobart Arena in downtown Troy for only the second and third time this season, when they play host to the Wooster Korn Kings on Friday and Saturday night at 8pm. All tickets are only $8, and can be purchased in advance online at www.TroyBruins.com or at the Hobart Arena box office on gamenight.
