Troy Bruins Fall on the Road 5-2
November 26, 2010 - All American Hockey League (AAHL)
Troy Bruins News Release
Lapeer, Michigan - In a reversal of fortune from last week's dominating 8-2 win in Lapeer, the Loggers exacted revenge on the Bruins with a hard fought 5-2 decision in front of their home crowd inside the Polar Palace Arena. Both Bruins goals on the night would be scored by former Bowling Green State University star Todd McIlrath.
The Loggers would open the period with an axe to grind, trying to erase the memory of last Friday's 8-2 defeat at the hand of the same Bruins squad fresh in their minds. Both club's uptempo start made for a physical but end to end flow for the first stanza, despite the goals coming close together at the midway point. Lapeer would break the scoring seal first, led by Loggers captain Brent Sullivan off a defensive breakdown in the Bruins right wing corner 7:22 into the game. Troy's veteran Todd McIlrath would have something to say about that however, intercepting a pass at the Logger blueline and beating goaltender Dave Desander one on one to tie the game at one, where it would remain for the remainder of the period. Skating into the dressing room after twenty minutes, Lapeer would slightly edge the Bruins in shots 11-10.
More of the same end to end action would await the fans packed inside the Polar Palace Arena in Lapeer, with the hometown Loggers causing all the commotion on the scoreboard with a pair of goals to extend their lead to 3-1 after forty minutes of play. Despite another ten shots on goal, the Bruins would be unable to find the back of the net throughout the period.
In the third, the Bruins would earn a number of US Army Powerplays, capitalizing on the aggressive style of the Loggers. McIlrath, taking a slash to his wrist, earned his Bruins a man advantage and led the charge himself with a Powerplay goal on the very next shift to cut the Loggers lead back to one just 4:03 into the final frame. Despite numerous chances in front of Desander and the Lapeer goal, the Bruins would be unable to muster any more goals, while watching the Loggers add a pair in the closing minutes, sealing the 5-2 final score.
With the loss, Troy's first this season against Lapeer, the Bruins record now stands at 6-4-2 and they solidify second place in the AAHL heading into a rare weekend away from the rink to prepare for their return home to the comfy confines of the Historic Hobart Arena in Downtown Troy to host the Indiana Blizzard and Queen City Storm on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4 at 8pm. Advance tickets to next weekend's Bruins home stand are on sale now for only $8 and can be purchased online by visiting www.TroyBruins.com or calling the Bruins office at 985-PUCK.
