Rockford Rivets News Release

Loves Park, Il. - The Rockford Rivets snapped a four game losing streak on Saturday night in Rockford when they defeated the Battle Creek Bombers by a score of 2-1.

The Rivets were the first to score in the second inning when Catcher Brock Mathis doubled to left field to drive in second baseman Kian O'Brien.

After Battle Creek tied the game in the third inning, the Rivets put another run across the board in the sixth when left fielder Ryan Cole scored after a balk by the Battle Creek pitcher.

The Bombers threaten to tie the game yet again in the eighth inning when they had a runner on both first and second base with no outs. This was then followed by a triple play started by third basemen Zach Sehgal to end the inning in style.

Sehgal's play was the first ever triple play that the Rivets completed since the team joined the Northwoods League. He commented on the play after the game.

"The ball was hit so hard I knew that I just to shuffle to my right and step on the base," Sehgal said. "It happened so fast but when I saw our shortstop Hal Hughes put his hands up I knew we had it."

Rockford was led by a stellar pitching performance from their starter Tyler "Big Country" Thornton. He went six innings while allowing just one run and striking out six while also picking up the win. Tanner Propst and Nathan Schneiderman came in to collectively pitch the last three innings, with Schneiderman picking up the save.

This was the first win for the Rivets in the second half of the season for the Northwoods League. They hope to keep the winning trend going when they travel to Wisconsin tomorrow night to take on the Woodchucks at 3:05 pm.
