Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Triple-A Phillies fell to 5-3-2 on the spring after dropping Monday's game 3-1 to the Triple-A Yankees. Philadelphia scattered eight hits in the ballgame but was only able to scratch across one run.
Brandon Leibrandt struck out four in his five innings of work for the Phillies. The southpaw allowed just one run and five hits as he sets his sights on another strong campaign. Parker Frazier and Tim Berry each tossed two innings of relief for the Triple-A Phillies. Berry struck out four of the nine batters he faced.
The Phillies signed Berry as a minor league free agent earlier this winter to provide organizational pitching depth. Berry reached the big leagues for two days with the Orioles but did not appear in the game. Bouncing back and forth between the Padres and Orioles organizations, he finished the year with a brief stop in Bowie. Berry has pitched well this spring and could open the year as a member of the Pig's pen.
The Phillies stranded seven runners in the game. Luke Williams batted leadoff and manned center field, collecting three hits and driving in the lone run. Mitch Walding, Andrew Pullin, Nick Rickles, Heicker Meneses, and Jesus Henriquez each had a hit.
Drafted by the Phillies in the third round of the 2015 draft, Williams was one of the top high school players in the country at the time of the draft. The 21-year-old played in 115 games for Lakewood in his first full season of pro ball last year. Williams had 17 extra-base hits in 2017 and drove in 27 runs. The Illinois native could begin the season back in the South Atlantic League or join some of the other prospects that the Phillies push to High-A ball despite struggling in the SAL.
There are three Triple-A games left for Philadelphia, including tomorrow against the Triple-A Blue Jays.
