September 5, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that two Texas businessmen and an attorney/judge have joined together to bring ABA professional basketball to the Rio Grande Valley in 2007. According to Joe Newman, "All three men are former players and have been very successful in everything they've undertaken. There is no doubt that they will make their team very successful also. We are very excited about this group and know that the entire area will embrace its new ABA team, especially when some of the great community and youth initiatives are announced." Team owners will include:
Art Gonzalez, originally from Chicago, but a McAllen resident for eleven years, attended Universidad Tecnologica de Monterrey and played power forward for Universidad Reglomontana and Centro de Estudios Universitarios in Monterrey, MX. He courrently owns AG Steel, an international steel brokerage.
Jesse Contreras, originally from Mercedes TX, and a Valley resident for 39 years, he graduated from Thurgood Marshall School of Law, owns a private practice and is the municipal judge of Mercedes, TX. He played power forward for the Broncs from 1984-1986.
Kevin Mitchell, originally from Fort Bragg NC and a McAllen resident for five years, he graduated Pan Am 2003 with a BA in marketing. He played point guard for the Broncs in 2001-2002 and currently owns R & W Development Company and is also currently employed by Novo Nordisk as a pharmaceutical representative.
"Jesse, Kevin and I have wanted to own a professional basketball team for quite sometime. The ABA is perfect for us. It provides very exciting professional basketball and entertainment at affordable prices and with so many other teams in Texas and nearby Mexico, it should create some great rivalries. 2007 can't get here quick enough for us," stated Gonzales. "We plan to hold a press conference shortly and make some early announcements. We are in business and ready to go."
