Keystone Ice Miners News Release
SOLDOTNA, AK - The Ice Miners netted three third period goals to break a 1-1 tie on Saturday night at Soldotna Sports Center on the way to a 4-1 win, and a weekend and season series sweep of the Kenai River Brown Bears. Keystone took 3 of 4 in their trip to Alaska and a total of 6 of the 8 games against Fairbanks and Kenai River in 2014-15.
Alex Archibald scored the only goal of the first period on a powerplay, as his point shot deflected past Alec Derks for a 1-0 Keystone lead at 9:17. The goal was unassisted and had the Ice Miners on top through 20 minutes. Kenai River got even at the 5:28 mark of the 2nd period when Alex Jackstadt was able to beat Alex Blankenburg, taking a feed in the slot from Jack Gessert and Gustav Berglund. The score was 1-1 through two.
The Ice Miners got their 2nd powerplay goal of the evening to break the tie at 3:43 of the third period when Taylor Fernandez took a cross-crease feed from Jacob Coleman and made the score 2-1. Austin Romzek added a secondary assist. Romzek would then score an insurance goal for Keystone at 18:28, set up by Niko Coffman and Matt Jones. Jones added an empty netter at 19:58 to bring the game to a 4-1 final. Alex Blankenburg registered his 14th win, making 22 saves.
The Ice Miners will continue their road trip in Michigan next Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as they visit Perani Arena to take on the Michigan Warriors, who will be fighting to keep their season alive. All three games will be broadcast on FASTHockey.com, with the AWAY feed carrying the Keystone broadcast. Two Ice Miners wins or one win plus a Springfield regulation loss will clinch a playoff spot for Keystone.
