Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Former Ball State University star Bryan Bullington combined with Jesse Chavez and Marino Salas on a one-hit shutout as Indianapolis rolled to a 5-0 blanking of Buffalo before a crowd of 8,690 Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 39-41 overall and 21-20 at home, while the Bisons fall to 36-44 on the season and 20-24 on the road.
Bullington (6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 SO), Chavez (1.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Salas (1.0 IP) did not allow a hit over the final 7.1 innings. The trio of right-handers yielded just one base knock and three walks while facing 32 batters on the afternoon.
While Bullington, Chavez and Salas were combining on the Tribe's fifth shutout of the season, RF Steve Pearce and 3B Neil Walker were launching roundtrippers to power the offensive attack.
Pearce and Walker clobbered back-to-back homers in the third before Pearce whacked another solo dinger in the eighth. Walker increased his team-leading total to 12, while Pearce now ranks second on the club with 11.
The long ball parade came after Indianapolis scored the only runs it would need in the second. Pearce led off with a single and DH Craig Wilson was hit by a pitch before both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. 1B Adam Boeve and SS Josh Wilson followed with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 2-0.
Pearce (3-for-4, 3 R, 2 RBI), who registered the only multi-hit performance for either club, posted his 20th multi-hit and second multi-homer effort of the campaign. The Pirates' No. 3 prospect is now 11-for-23 (.478) with three homers, six runs and eight RBI over his last six affairs.
Bisons RHP Jeff Harris (5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) fell to 3-5 with the loss. 3B Morgan Ensberg picked up Buffalo's only base knock in the game -- a second-inning single.
The game was delayed for 38 minutes due to rain in the fourth inning.
The teams wrap up their four-game series on Thursday at 7 p.m. LHP David Huff is scheduled to start for Buffalo, while RHP Jimmy Barthmaier is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The game will be televised live by WHMB-TV 40 with Howard Kellman and Brian Dorsett. The contest will also be carried by WXLW-950 AM and www.IndyIndians.com with Scott McCauley and Brad Wochomurka.
The Indians will donate $1 to the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis for each person in attendance on Thursday evening. Fans can take advantage of 2-for-1 coupons at Greater Indianapolis Red Cross offices, all Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Districts and all Indianapolis Fire Stations.
