INDIANAPOLIS, IND.--Second-year manager Cecil Cooper will be joined by veteran coaches Bobby Randall and Stan Kyles, it was announced today by the Indianapolis Indians. The Indians also announced the return of Jeff Paxson as athletic trainer.

Randall, who spent 18 years as head baseball coach at Iowa State and Kansas, will serve as the team's infield and hitting coach. Kyles, serving his fourth season in the Brewers organization, will be the club's pitching coach.

The 55-year-old Randall, a native of Norton, Kan., compiled a 475-524-1 record as head baseball coach at Iowa State and Kansas. A 1970 graduate of Kansas State, where he played both baseball and basketball, Randall is just one of four Wildcats ever to be drafted in the first two rounds of the professional baseball draft. He was selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Dodgers after his junior year at Kansas State.

After six years in the Dodgers farm system, Randall was traded to the Minnesota Twins and made an immediate impact at the Major League level. He posted his best numbers during his rookie season in 1976, scoring 55 runs, recording 127 hits and hitting .267. Known primarily for his defense, in 1979, Randall helped the Twins turn a league record 203 double plays from his position at second base.

The 42-year-old Kyles, a native of Chicago, Ill., attended Phillips High School along with future Indiana University Olympic track star Sunder Nix. Last year, Kyles guided Double-A Huntsville's pitching staff to the top of the Southern League, posting an impressive 3.17 ERA.

A fourth round draft pick of the Chicago Cubs in 1979, Kyles pitched 11 seasons in the minor leagues before retiring after the 1989 season. He compiled a career 52-56 record and 3.86 ERA, including Triple-A stops at Iowa (1983), Tacoma (1985- 87) and Albuquerque (1988).

The 33-year-old Paxson, born in Bluffton, Ind., is a graduate of Homestead High School in Fort Wayne. He has been an athletic trainer in the Milwaukee Brewers organization since 1994.
