Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- The Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats opened a three-game series against the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 5-3 New York-Penn League victory Monday night at historic Centennial Field.

The ValleyCats led 3-2 when they got a solo homer from A.J. Reed in the top of the eighth inning and a solo home run from Alex Hernandez in the top of the ninth to build the lead to three runs. The home runs were the fourth and fifth allowed by Vermont pitching in the last two games, while the Lake Monsters have also given up 10 home runs in the last eight games after going seven straight without surrendering a long ball.

Those two insurance runs would prove key as Vermont tried to rally in the ninth inning. Andy Paz led off the inning with a single and later scored in the inning on a Joe Bennie two-out pop up double to rightfield cutting the deficit to 5-3 and putting the tying run on second base. After a Ryan Huck walk loaded the bases, reliever Ryan Thompson came on to get pinch hitter Justin Higley to groundout on a nice play by ValleyCat third baseman J.D. Davis.

Vermont had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third on a Bennie RBI infield single, but Tri-City quickly took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth and added another run in the fifth for a 3-1 advantage. The Lake Monsters cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fifth as Paz led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Wolfe groundout.

Bobby Boyd, Ryan Bottger and Nick Tanielu each had two hits for Tri-City (11-7), while starter Luis Ordosgoitti allowed one run on four hits over four innings. Reliever Raul Rivera earned the victory despite giving up the Lake Monsters run in the fifth inning. Scott Masik went 3-for-4 for Vermont, collecting a single in each of his first three at bats a day after singling in each of his last three at bats.

Paz, who entered the game 2-for-27 on the season, was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Jerad Grundy (0-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts over the first five innings to take the loss for Vermont (7-11), which has now lost three straight and seven of its last eight games.

The Lake Monsters and ValleyCats will play the second of the three-game series on Tuesday at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 pm and then wrap up Vermont's six-game homestand on Wednesday.
