Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - The Travelers' five-run second inning proved to be more than enough Thursday night as Arkansas upended Corpus Christi 6-2 before 5,095 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park.
The result snaps the Travs' seven-game losing streak.
Leo Heras began the ballgame with a double down the left-field line. Lefty Sean Newcomb struck out the next two hitters before issuing a walk to A.J. Reed. Jack Mayfield was next and cracked a single through the left side, scoring Heras from second base for a 1-0 Hooks lead.
Edison Frias held the advantage in the home half, despite issuing a pair of walks.
In the Arkansas (24-23, 60-56) second, three singles set the stage for back-to-back bases-loaded free passes by Frias. Raywilly Gomez then sent a base hit into right field, plating a pair. Aaron West entered from the pen and allowed the fifth run to score on an errant pick-off attempt at first base.
The Travs posted another tally in the fourth. Blake Gailen capitalized on a couple of Hooks errors with a sacrifice fly to right field.
West and Travis Ballew, who tossed three scoreless innings, finished the game by holding Arkansas to five hits and one walk.
Newcomb struck out six and worked around four walks. Eduard Santos entered in the sixth and kept the Hooks off the scoreboard over the next three frames.
Corpus Christi (26-21, 74-43) got to Kyle Winkler for a run in the ninth. Jack Mayfield and Jon Kemmer opened with singles, putting runners at the corners for Jio Mier, who bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. The Hooks hit into three twin-killings on the night.
Corpus Christi heads to Springdale, AR, to begin a three-game series with the Naturals. Northwest Arkansas sends Luke Farrell (2-3, 3.39) to the hill Friday night. The Hooks go with lefty Brian Holmes (5-5, 4.57). First pitch 7:15.
