Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - Ramon Torres and Raul Mondesi greeted the Hooks with back-to-back home runs Friday night and Northwest Arkansas never looked back, routing Corpus Christi 8-1 before 7,323 fans at Arvest Ballpark.
Starting pitcher Luke Farrell delivered the Naturals (18-29, 58-59) their first series-opening win since July 2.
Following the Torres and Mondesi barrage, Brian Holmes struck out the next two hitters. A single and walk put Zane Evans at the plate. Evans ripped a line drive into center, scoring Jorge Bonifacio with ease. Hunter Dozier managed to cross the plate on the play as the ball was mishandled by Leo Heras, capping a four-run first.
In the third, consecutive two-out singles by Dozier, Zane Evans and Frank Schwindel made it 5-1 Naturals.
Holmes faced four in the fifth but failed to record an out. Evans' bases-loaded single to left field ended the lefty's night. Ruben Alaniz entered from the pen and promptly surrendered a two-run double to Schwindel, staking Northwest Arkansas to an 8-1 advantage. Alaniz then induced three ground-ball outs, stranding a pair in scoring position.
Farrell held the Hooks (26-22, 74-44) to a Heras solo home run over six innings of work. The effort came in the wake of his father, John, announcing he would step down as manager of the Boston Red Sox after being diagnosed with Stage 1 lymphoma. John Farrell described the cancer as localized and highly curable. He hopes to rejoin the Red Sox next season in time for spring training.
Luke Farrell gave way to Malcom Culver, who hurled two scoreless innings. Aroni Nina sidestepped a single and a walk in the ninth. The Hooks left 11 on base.
Alaniz finished the game for Corpus Christi by pitching four shutout innings.
The series continues Saturday. Christian Binford (4-6, 4.98) gets the call for the Naturals. The Hooks counter with Kyle Westwood (7-6, 4.77). First pitch 6:05. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
