Danbury Trashers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI --Despite being outshot 49-23 and trailing in the opening minute of the game, the Danbury Trashers scratched and clawed their way back into the Colonial Cup Finals after Sly Daigle's 47 effort was bolstered by Alex Goupil's game-winning shorthanded goal in the final period as the Trashers evened the series with the Wings following Saturday's 4-2 win.
Damian Surma opened the scoring just 51 seconds in as his 3rd effort slipped past Daigle with assists from Kory Karlander and Nick Bootland to give the Wings a 1-0 lead which held for the remainder of the period.
Danny Stewart tied the score with his 4th playoff goal as he went coast-to-coast and slipped a shot past Joel Martin at the 24 second mark of the second, while Sergei Durdin blasted a shot from the blue line past Martin at 3:07, assisted by Dave MacIsaac. Danbury led 2-1 heading into the final period, the first time that the Wings trailed after a period during the postseason after winning their first nine games.
With Stewart in the box for a slashing penalty in the third period, Alex Goupil raced after a cleared puck by Daigle and fired it by Martin at the 6:47 mark to give Danbury a 3-1 lead. The goal was huge as Nick Bootland scored his 3rd goal in two games at the 9:55 mark to close the lead to 3-2. However, David Beauregard added an empty net goal at the 19:19 mark to seal the win, as the Trashers evened the Colonial Cup Finals at 1-1 with Danbury returning home for Wednesday night's game three.
Daigle stopped 47 of 49 shots for his 7th postseason win, while Martin loses his first playoff game this season with a 19 save effort.
